Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus even more on poker.
The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would regularly play against one another. Howard had access into a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. He moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
