While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play many hours and lost most times. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus attention even more on poker.

The actual advancement in his skills began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
