Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players often get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in just about all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

While it seems complex at first, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing assortment of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high hand, as well as several shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
