Gus Hansen enjoyed a marvelous year on the WPT where he was the only player to make it to the final table in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might recall one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen won a huge pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Gus has made many televised poker appearances and is considered to be one of the best bettors anywhere in the world. While betting on internet poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. Gus frequently plays in the 200/400 NL maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen more often than not buys in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and gambles very weak. He waits patiently for a decent hand and then goes all in. I know Gus is an outstanding poker player but certainly not even close to the everyday players at 200/400no limit. Unless Gus is flat broke, he has no reason to settle at the game with the min buy in.
Playing for the min takes almost all of the ability out of deep stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be 1 of the greatest players in the world but he cannot buy-in for the full amt.. I think television can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The greatest poker players in the world might just be players you have won’t have heard about.
