Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved gambling on numerous card games when he was young. The real advancement in his skills began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly compete against one another. He was able to access several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world today. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
