Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants can get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated initially, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of play simply enough. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an amazing collection of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi low.
