Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in nearly all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease.
