Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently play against each other. He was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategic concepts in the game of NL holdem.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker world ever. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
